Open coastal plateaux

These coastal plateaux (areas of elevated, relatively level land) are found intermittently along the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) coastline, interrupted by combes and river valleys, extending up to two kilometres inland. 

Features 

  • Open plateaux up to 130 metres high with panoramic views, dissected by combes and river valleys
     
  • Windblown vegetation and limited deciduous woodland
     
  • Regular medium to large field pattern
     
  • Stone boundary walls and dense low hedges (often elm) with occasional hedgerow oaks
     
  • Mixed land use, much for growing crops
     
  • Few roads, but many rights of way
     
  • Low settlement density
     
  • Influence of geology on soil colour
     
  • Extensive views along the coast
