Walks & trails

There are over 50 walks across South Devon AONB  to download here for free. They range in length from 2 to 12 miles and include a map, details of facilities and access as well as information on wildlife, archaeology and history.

These 19  walks devised with the assistance of The South West Coast Path Association,   are listed withn one section. There is the option of downloading the map with walk route, directions and a brief description onto a smart phone for ease of navigation, or downloading the pdf with additional information.

These new walking routes were made possible thanks to support from the South Devon Coastal Local Action Group and funding from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development: Europe investing in rural areas LEADER programme.

East Prawle and Prawle Point: Colourful Landscapes (01/08/12)

Distance: 3.5 miles
Grade: Strenuous

Cultural Trail: Colourful Landscapes. This walk is part of a series of themed trails to help you learn more about the landscape around you. Other trail themes include: Coast & Conflict; Trade & Settlement; Man & the Landscape.

Explore South Devon:  Kingswear to Greenway (09/01/20)

Distance: 4.5 miles
Grade: Moderate

A lovely linear walk up the Dart estuary. Through woodland, farm fields and the Greenway Estate, with alternative return routes by water, on foot or by steam!

Distance: 3.5 miles
Grade: Moderate to strenuous

Take in the old haunts of Saxons and smugglers, lush coastline and glittering sea, then amble back through the green fields of South Devon.

Distance: 3.75 miles
Grade: Moderate

All of maritime life is here - Start Bay's great sweep of sea and land, traditional fishing communities, and the mysterious and tragic lost village of Hallsands. The walk wends it way home again along green lanes and footpaths.

Distance: 5.5 miles (shorter route 3 miles)
Grade: Moderate

A circuit linking Brixham's two headlands. Fine views, plenty of local history from Napoleon to the historic fishing fleet of the harbour, mixed with an abundance of superb wildlife and nationally protected landscapes.

Distance: 3 miles
Grade: Moderate

Step out along the coast path, from the Salcombe Estuary and out to meet the wide open sea. Exhilarating scenery, and a wonderful way to get the wind in your sails.

Distance: 4.5 miles
Grade: Moderate

A walk of towering cliffs and endless coastal views. Scenes and stories of shipwrecks, and the charm of Devon lanes winding between abundant hedgebanks with the beautiful, nestled fishing village of Hope Cove to start from and return to.

Distance: 2 miles
Grade: Easy to moderate

This short easy walk skirts the edges of Waterhead Creek in Kingswear before heading into the woods alongside the estuary and back along the railway line.

A walk that’s relaxing and bracing. Beaches with a lovely lazy feel, refreshing open clifftops, the timelessly delightful village of Ringmore tucked away, and enough ‘up-and-down’ to get the circulation going.

Grade: Moderate

Passing through an enchanted landscape of rocky spires and jumbled pinnacles, with inspiring views in all directions, this is a coastal walk guaranteed to lift the spirits.

Grade: Easy to Moderate

Like a satisfying meal, this walk has the shingle sweep of the beach to start, a main course of all the wildlife you could wish for on a National Nature Reserve, and the sweet and characterful village of Slapton for dessert. Perfect!
