The Growing Orchard Communities project aims to support local people to manage healthy orchards for the whole community to enjoy. It is run by Orchard Link, supported by the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The project has been going from strength to strength since our launch in November last year. We have 24 community orchard groups signed up to the scheme and are well under way with a full and interesting programme of training days, workshops, skill share session and network events. These events and activities have been attended by 176 volunteers so far!
On 23rd April, we held our first network event on the theme of Celebrating our Orchards. It was held in the beautiful old orchard at Lupton House on a warm and sunny spring day. The orchard was looking wonderful and the hard work of the Apple Soup community orchard group was evident. The groups had a go at small activities which they could use on their sites for community events and discussed larger arts possibilities and what that might entail. We had a session on action planning and open questions as well as a delicious lunch.
