Connecting Actively with Nature

What’s happening in South Devon National Landscape

Connecting Actively with Nature is a Devon wide project – the South Devon National Landscape Unit is organising a special series of short walks in Kingsbridge.

We’re organising some short walks to discover the wildlife on the Kingsbridge estuary in a series of 10 minute easy strolls to take in the view and study the wildlife, followed by a cup of tea or coffee.

They will be led by our Project Officer Adam who is a keen birder.

Who are they for?

If you’re 55 or over, want to get more active in our amazing landscape and meet some of the residents of Kingsbridge, then these walks are for you.

When and where?

They take place on Wednesdays in June and July 2019 between 9.30am – 10am. First walk June 4th.

Meet outside Kingsbridge Information Centre. The walks will be short –no more than 10 minutes to start with, on flat, surfaced paths. There will be time afterwards to chat and have a cup of tea.

Please come and join us you will be very welcome!

More info about the project

The ‘Connecting Actively to Nature (CAN)’ programme in Devon will help people to discover the combined benefits of a more active lifestyle with the psychological benefits that being outdoors in nature brings. It is run by Active Devon with funding through the National Lottery, from Sport England.

With local partners and organisations, groups and individuals we help to establish new opportunities or develop existing provision, so that more people can choose activity as part of their everyday lifestyle.

‘Connecting Actively to Nature’ is a new project that will help people aged 55 and over get more Naturally Active. The project aims to make getting Naturally Active easy and enjoyable for those who currently do little or no activity, or are struggling to stay active.

*Inactive; less than 30 minutes of exercise per week

This project was developed with the Devon Local Nature Partnership’s Naturally Healthy Forum partners. To find out more about wider Naturally Healthy work in Devon and other LNP work see www.naturaldevon.org.uk

We CAN! Connect Actively to Nature!

Devon’s Local Nature Partnership has been awarded £500,000 of National Lottery funding from Sport England to deliver an exciting five year programme that will support older people in Devon and Torbay to connect actively to nature. With 122,000 people aged 55+ in Devon and Torbay doing less than 30 minutes of physical activity each week it is a vital, innovative and forward looking initiative.

“The ‘Connecting Actively to Nature (CAN)’ programme in Devon will help over 3,000 inactive people to discover the combined benefits of a more active lifestyle with the psychological benefits that being outdoors in nature brings” said Hannah Colston Senior Development Manager at Active Devon who are managing the CAN Programme on behalf of the Devon Local Nature partnership. The partnership will seek to improve and adapt existing opportunities so they are more welcoming to people who are taking their first steps into activity. Additionally over three hundred volunteer ambassadors will be recruited to help make people’s first steps easy and enjoyable.

“The organisations that have come together to tackle this agenda represent an innovative and exciting mix of environmental, physical activity and conservation type organisations” said Sue Goodfellow, Chair of the Local Nature Partnership. “Our first step is to carry out some crucial research via a survey, there are opportunities to win prizes! Visit www.activedevon.org for more information.

There are plenty of opportunities and ideas for walks to explore our fantastic Devon countryside and coast on our Explore Devon website. There are 15 accessible walks to choose from, plus several short and long walks to try if feeling more adventurous. Now is a great time to get walking to enjoy the autumnal colours.
