28 May Sir Gary Streeter MP launches South Devon National Landscape Management Plan
Representatives from various organisations gathered last Friday, for the celebration of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’s new 5 year Plan. It will guide the work of those who care for the protected landscape until 2024.
Following months of planning, consultation and partnership working, the new South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty Management Plan was unveiled at a special event held in the heart of the National Landscape at environmental education centre Battisborough House,near Holbeton.
Sir Gary Streeter MP for South West Devon officially launched the plan with the National Landscape Partnership Committee, which has been instrumental in helping devise new policies and actions .
He commented “It is a great privilege to launch this framework which addresses the competing pressures on the landscape. This plan clearly identifies ways in which the National Landscape Partnership will deliver for the local economy and communities helping them grow in a way that is sensitive to the area, as well as making the most of the landscape to improve their health and wellbeing.”
Chairman of the National Landscape Partnership, John Green, said “The requirement for a plan is rooted in law but its use and ownership is firmly rooted within local communities, businesses and organisations.”
South Devon National Landscape Unit Manager Roger English, identified a number of themes for future work and stated, “We want to engage at the very forefront of landscape scale projects, working with farmers and landowners as the new environmental land management scheme is developed, tourism managers in delivering sustainable tourism and with our many partners across the area in helping to deliver for communities and wildlife.”
The event was kindly hosted by Lawrence and Lee Glanville of South Battisborough Farm. The farm, part of the Flete Estate is home to 450 dairy cows. Lawrence explained how their diversification into the manufacture of ‘Surfing Cow’ Ice Cream 12 months ago had benefitted from the stunning landscape, that customers could experience when buying ice cream from the farm and that hosting visits from young people staying at Battisborough House was very satisfying as they started to make connections about the landscape and their food.
